Are you okay?!!

“This has to be one of the dumbest damn stunts I’ve ever pulled. What was I thinking? If Ari hadn’t been watching, I could be dead, and Wyatt—who knows?”

Ghost chuffed in commiseration.

I don’t regret a second of it, well except for the attack.

Something she could never say to Adam or Nicholai.

With stealthy grace, Wyatt moved to stand before her in dry jeans, polo shirt, and tennis shoes. Before she could broach the subject of his leaving, he held up one hand.

“I have questions. First, thank you. You’ve given me a tremendous gift.”

Wraith lifted his head and grumbled from where he sat in the corner. Kiera agreed with her wolf. This wasn’t going to be an easy conversation.

She should’ve paid closer attention. If the predators had coordinated the attack while she was swimming with dolphins, the outcome would have been different.

A saner course of action would include opening a portal and whisking Wyatt to safety without his consent.

After all this time, and all the things she’d learned to do, one meeting had reduced her—no, both of them—to recalcitrant teenagers in a matter of seconds. Fate? If so, what was next?

“Okay. Say what’s on your mind. Tell me what’s going on. First, are we safe for the time being?” Wyatt retrieved several items from the freezer. “I’ll nuke these. Not as good, but faster than the oven when you want a quick snack. I’ll fix a proper lunch in a bit.”

“As far as I know. And before you ask, I don’t know who influenced the hawk.”

“But the falcon?”

“Is a friend of a friend, on our side?”

“Remind me to thank him.”

“You already have. The Swiss-made carving tools.”

“Ah, yes. Ari is your wood carver.”

In answer to her stress, Wraith blocked Wyatt’s path to Kiera. The curled lip and deep rumbling growl pre-empted Wyatt from closing the distance. He withdrew to pace along the kitchen island and let her breathe deep once again.

“Got the message, Wraith.” This time, his tone inspired a more formal approach but no less heat. “I’ll respect the distance.”

“I’d better call Adam and get him over here. He’s aware of what’s happened by now and will come storming in to yell at us both. You have to realize, we gotta leave.”

“Figured you’d say that, but no. I’m not going anywhere. Hell, if they have birds to watch and attack on command, then there’s nowhere to hide.”

“They’ve not found our sanctuary.”

Instead of calling Adam, she sent a text stating they were safe and that she was trying to convince Wyatt to leave.

In a surreal atmosphere, Wyatt redirected their conversation to places visited, old ruins in foreign countries, tropical islands whose only full-time occupants included animals and insects. Intricate descriptions helped her appreciate his knowledge of wildlife and times gone by but didn’t solve their immediate problem.

“I’d love to show you some of my favorite haunts, someday. Before they died, my parents took me to various countries, usually to study some ancient ruin.”

He’d retrieved and heated up some kind of fancy snack she could neither identify nor refuse after tasting the first bite.
